Basic Math Facts in Focus (PD)

This course equips educators with a deeper understanding of how students develop fluency with basic math facts and how instruction can support that development. Participants examine the progression from counting to reasoning to automaticity and distinguish rote memorization from fluency grounded in mathematical understanding. The course explores research-based approaches such as pattern recognition, reasoning strategies, and targeted games that support long-term retention and student confidence. Participants learn developmentally appropriate techniques for teaching addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts, along with meaningful ways to assess student progress. By applying knowledge of developmental progressions and reasoning strategies, educators can design engaging instruction that moves beyond speed-based measures of success and strengthens students’ fluency with basic math facts.
